Dear Kinamed Agents and Reps,
Quick follow up to the last email regarding Cementing Best Practices (linked here): We recently came across DePuy’s official “Guidance for Cementing Total Knee Replacements” online (linked here). A highlighted version of the guide can be viewed/ downloaded at this link. Note their recommendation in section 4.1:
“The bone and implant should be dried prior to applying the cement; this may be achieved by drying in various ways including using an absorbent pad, such as a dry sponge, suction, or a carbon dioxide jet.”
As you know, CarboJet (from Kinamed) is the only clinically proven orthopedic device that can be described as a “carbon dioxide jet”. As for the other recommended methods of drying (“absorbent pad, such as a dry sponge [or] suction”)…it’s hard to fathom how anyone could put those on a level with CarboJet. Judging by the authors’ failure to correlate carbon dioxide jet to enhanced cement penetration…they are still missing the point. Your surgeons will get it though! Ask them to take a look at the dry interstices of cancellous bone in our videos and brochures, then read about how CarboJet has been proven to increase in cement penetration and bone-cement interface strength (Goldstein and Stanley)…it’s not that complicated!
Despite these shortcomings, the Depuy Cement Guidance document is still an important recommendation and very much worth sharing – especially with DePuy users in your territory. The Depuy “experts” are coming around to CarboJet. And – judging by CarboJet’s double digit growth rate – so is the rest of the ortho world.
Let me know if you have any questions.
